Yahoo Blog Search

There seems to be a whole lot of buzz about Yahoo’s new blog search and it’s integration with Yahoo News. A search on the term ‘earthquake’ (try it) gives the user a list of news headlines in the main content window AND a list of relevant blog search results in the right hand column.
Robert Scoble seems fairly unimpressed by the new tool, as does Steve Rubel, but I think this endeavor send an important signal: blog searches have become a true companion to mainstream media. This tool and layout seems to say that loud and clear.

    Here’s another article about this:

This is exciting for the “citizen journalists” who will get their chance to contribute to the news community but many “traditional journalists” are seeing this as a threat to their positions and jobs. I see their concern about the “citizen journalists” not adhering to journalism standards or ethics that are usually enforced in traditional media.
I’m very curious to see what sort of results we’l l get from the extended blog searches. How relevant will they be? Can the source and content be trusted? Will a new set of journalism standards be created for the “citizen journalists”?

I have noticed this gaining interest lately as well and am torn between whether it will be a popular addition to searches or another annoyance.
On one end, you will be able to access blog information much easier which is a bonus for bloggers with something news-worthy to say. On the other end, there are already so many times you really can’t find what you’re looking for from a blog search result, end up hunting around, get frustrated and leave.
It’s nice that they are separating the news and the blog results, but it will certainly become ignored if irrelevant information shows from searches too often.

The journalism standards and ethical implications will also be interesting to see what is decided and how it is controlled.

Does anyone feel that the major search engines will be taking on too much if they add blog results to search result pages? I mean, with the sponsored/paid results already included around the regular results, it seems like this would be a little overkill – not to mention determining how to avoid duplicating regular search results and blog search results.

Yahoo’s Blog Search: Are Those Blog Results or Sponsored Links?

Lots of talk about the inclusion of blogs on Yahoo! News search. Matt thinks that blog searches have become a true companion to mainstream media. I agree with Dave Winer that the blog search results don’t belong in the margin….

We’ve talked before about search engines’ expanded options (Web sites, photos, news, and now blogs) but it’s interesting to see the increasing popularity of blogs and how this will affect searches. While there are a lot of people who still…
